Cottage Grove

Without volunteers this route will never be finished...

I'm always looking for people willing to help work on the Route. There are all sorts of things that need to be done. If you'd like to give me a hand let me know. Without volunteers lending a helping hand, the Route and this website will likely disappear. The simple fact... I'm 75 years old and simply don't have time to complete it on my own.

One of the first thing that new members likely ask is... "Hey! Where's all the vegetation?" First of all, there is a certain order that objects for the Route have to follow. Just like building a new home, you don't do the landscaping before you know where the house is going to be positioned. Vegetation is usually one of the last things placed on a route. I've just recently started planting forests and other vegetation. The current version of the Route now has the entire length of Cow Creek Canyon (over 37 miles of it) planted with forests. There's still a lot of other vegetation that's needed close to the tracks and along the Creek.

There are also thousands of structures that need to be built. From residential homes to large lumber mills and other commercial buildings. Because of where I live I often make trips out along the route taking pictures that I can use later to texture object that I create. Thanks to Google's street side view you can use it to get a better idea of how things actually look as you travel along the Route. Here in Oregon forests are a crop. If you look at satellite images of our forests you will see large numbers of sections of forest at various stages of growth. When I planted the forests along Cow Creek Canyon I used Google Earth to determine where these areas were as wells as what stage of growth to plant. Some people say that I'm too much of a perfectionist... I don't think I am... I just feel that any job worth doing is worth doing right.

The best way to find out what things need to be worked on is to take a first hand look at the Route. Use the Route Editor and "fly" up and down along the route... Hopefully you'll find yourself saying, "Hey! That looks like something that I can do!"

If you do decide to help with the work, I'm almost always around to assist you in not only getting you started, but to support you anytime you need assistance.

You'll also find that I already have many items already created but not yet added to the Route. All they need is for someone to find the proper places for them.

I can't stress enough how important it is to help with creating the Route. This can no longer be a "one person project"... Take the first step and head over to the Contacts page. Drop me a note and we can figure out what area you might like to work on.
